Introduction to Golf in West India

India has a varied landscape, from hill ranges to lakes, dense forests to tea estates, from buzzing metros to silent small towns, with golf courses strewn throughout the length and breadth of India. Indian golf courses as such, provide an interesting and invigorating backdrop. Every golf course is set in rich pockets of India, rich for their cultural heritage, historical ambience, and natural beauty rendering it unique by itself.

Golf is yet a game for the elite class in India. Golf is also known as a sport for the cool and calculated. Golf being an outdoor sport, the landscape and the weather plays a marked role on the player. The varying weather also joins in the game, for or against the players.

The states of Maharashtra, Goa and Gujarat together form West India. There are five golf courses in these parts. Three are general Golf courses and two are Military golf courses.

The Presidency Golf Club, Mumbai (Bombay)
The Poona Golf Club, Poona (Pune)
The Gaekwad Baroda Golf Club, Vadodara (Baroda)

The Presidency Golf Club, Mumbai

The most famous golf course of West India is the Presidency Golf Club in Mumbai. It is located in Chembur, one of the suburbs of Mumbai, just a 30 minute drive from the airport. It is a 110 acre / Par 72 Men, 70 Ladies/5463 yards Ladies/6223 yards men /18 hole green course. It was built in 1827 and redesigned by Peter Thompson bringing it at par with International standards. The typical Mumbai climate, due to its proximity to the sea, causes shifting sea breezes which provides a challenge to the best player. Though it is not a difficult course, it is a challenging one to break par.

Poona Golf Club, Pune

The Poona golf club is located at 6, Bund Garden Road, in Pune. The Poona Golf Club is a 94 acres/par-71/yardage 6604/men 6198 yards/ladies 5488 yards/18 holes green course. It is not very large. It economizes over an area of 94 acres of land and in the bargain, the holes are placed in such a manner that it adds to the mental challenge of the game. The weather in Poona is cool and pleasant and so golf can be enjoyed throughout the year.

The Gaekwad Baroda Golf Club

Another golf course in West India is the Gaekwad Baroda golf course situated in the Lakshmi Vilas estate, Vadodara (Baroda) in the state of Gujarat. This was originally a ten hole course designed by Pratapsingh Gaekwad for his European guests later redeveloped by his grandson. In 2002, Ranjit Nanda and Associates redesigned it .Today it stands against the backdrop of the majestic Lakshmi Vilas Palace. It is a par 71/7000 yards/18 hole green course.

Military Golf courses
There is an army golf course Ahmedabad, Gujarat and a Naval Golf course in Goa.
