The Gulmarg Golf Course is a great place to play golf during the summer months. Because of the mild temperatures you can enjoy your day without getting too hot. This golf course is unlike any other because of its altitude. At 2,650 m this is the highest golf course in the world. Because of its location the course layout is different from other courses. The slope of the land provides golfers with a PAR 72 course.
If you are planning a vacation in Kashmir you will be able to purchase a temporary membership to the golf club which will allow you to play as long as you like. This temporary membership also allows you to use the clubhouse and restaurant. If you did not bring your own clubs they can be rented at the pro-shop which is located there. There are also trainers available if you are a novice and wish to learn more.
This historic Gulmarg Golf Club began in 1911 by the British. It was their custom to visit Gulmarg as a holiday resort. Since that time it has been turned into a top notch club which plays host to many golf tournaments for both the amateur and the professional.
The first championship golf game was played at Gulmarg in 1922. Following that the Nedou’s Cup was played in 1929. Also in 1929 the DP Vasu Championship for Women and the Children’s Golf Competition were played there. In 1948 it seemed that golfers lost interest and the course was taken over by the government. Avid golfers welcomed the revived interest in golf with open arms. The year 1954 saw many golfing events at this location.
Later Peter Thomson and Associates of Australia renovated the course and changed the layout to better fit in with the natural beauty in the area. Their renovation provided a greater challenge for the professional golfer.
