The Digboi Golf Club was founded in 1888 and sits amid thick and dense forest and lush tea estates. It is an eighteen hole, PAR 72 course for a total distance of 6,309 yards. It is considered to be the best course in the entire upper Assam. It is for this reason that all of the important tournaments are held at this location.
The Digboi Club is bordered on three sides by the beautiful Deihing Forest Reserve. The fourth side follows along the side of National Highway 38. It is from here that you can get a magnificent view of the Arunachal Pradesh Mountains which loom on the horizon. The Deihing Forest Reserve is home to wide varieties of wild animals who often wander out onto the course. Because of a drain which runs through the course, these animals often come out at night looking for something to drink. This forest reserve is home to wild elephants, barking deer, parakeets, hornbill birds, wild boar, leopards, and even venomous snakes such as the king cobra. There is also a wide variety of flowering plants in the forest which provide a beautiful and peaceful setting.
The Digboi Club is the only eighteen hole golf course in the entire northeast of India. This undulating course is well laid out and provides golfers with an enjoyable experience. The club also has a small clubhouse which offers rooms to change in as well as a bar. There are currently no overnight accommodations but the Indian Oil Company guest houses are located nearby.
For those who are visiting the Digboi area you will find several interesting attractions to visit. Digboi is known as the city of oil. Oil was first discovered there in 1879 and today is the world’s oldest refinery which is still in operation. You can also visit the War Cemetery and the National Oil Park which is a museum and wildlife sanctuary. This sanctuary offers splendid beauty and is home to the very rare White Winged Wood Duck. Along with this rare duck you will also find wild horses which are known in the area as Feral Horses. This sanctuary is something the visitor should take time to visit.
